Church Hill

North Yorkshire

Lat: 53.7957590 Long: -1.2606170

This striking church commands a beautiful view to the East across towards the sea. On a clear day the building glows in the Sun and the landscape stretches away from you. Inside the church is a special house guest - Jess the cat - so please be careful with the door!

Given as a thank-offering to the Archbishop of York in 938 AD by King Athelstan, the manor of Sherburn became the seat of the Archbishops of York until the middle of the 14th century. The original Saxon church was rebuilt at the beginning of the 12th century to reflect Sherburn's ecclesiastical importance. Although much modified, evidence of the church's Norman origins can be seen in the nave and north aisle.
